C Logger is perhaps best known for their outstanding line of
video and data logging products. With the introduction of the
RC Eye 650, this Hong Kong based company now has its first
airframe under its belt.
At first glance the RC Eye 650 may look like just about every other
quadcopter on the market. However once you look closer you’ll realize
that the design effort clearly focused on ease of assembly, serviceability,
and an ability to carry a useful payload. I guess this shouldn’t come as a
surprise since the RC Eye 650 was most likely conceived as a flying plat-
form for RC Logger’s array of video, OSD, and data logging offerings.
OVERVIEW
The chassis, protective covers, and landing gear struts of the RC Eye
650 are made of plastic and are extremely light weight. For rigidity, the
four motor booms and stabilization plate are aluminum. This combina-
tion produces an airframe that weighs in at less than two pounds
(including the motors and propellers).
Thrust is supplied by four Scorpion SII-2213-940kv motors that
develop power in the neighborhood of about 140 watts each. Spinning
12 inch props, the platform has a very nice power to weight ratio and is
capable of lifting approximately two and a quarter pounds of payload
(including the flight battery).
Flight control utilizes Atmel RISC microcontrollers and 3-axis
MEMS gyros. Designed in Germany, RC Logger claims this flight
control system is identical to those used in civil aviation. The flight
control system also features an asynchronous serial interface that
facilitates customizing performance parameters, data logging, and
interfacing with custom hardware. RC Logger also claims that a com-
munications interface is presently under development that when
augmented by their GPS add-on module and firmware updates will
add new capabilities to the system; citing autonomous flight as one
of those capabilities.
ASSEMBLY
Building the RC Eye 650 is a pleasure. The kit is expertly packaged.
All of its parts are in labeled bags found inside one of four numbered
boxes. The assembly instructions call out both the box and bag num-
bers that contain the parts required for each step. There is no printed
assembly manual. Instead you are directed to RC Logger’s web-site
where you can download the latest manual. I actually prefer this as
you’ll always have up-to-date information. It also allowed me to use
my iPad to guide me through the build. It took me about two hours
from the time I opened the box until I had a ready-to-fly quadcopter;
including setup time.

SUMMARY
As a professional engineer, it’s not often that I don’t find some fault with a
design, although this happens to be one of those times. Building, setting
up, and flying the RC Eye 650 were as pleasant an experience as one
could ask for. This machine is definitely not going to be one of those prod-
ucts that peaks my interest for a little while and then quietly retires to the
shelf. I’m sure that with a camera on board that I’ll find many uses for this
machine; first of which will be to check my gutters for leaves!
SPECS
All of the elec-
tronics are contained
on three circuit
boards; two dual
ESC boards and a
combination con-
troller/gyro board.
Each of the ESC
boards connects to
the controller board
via a flat ribbon
cable. A ten-wire
cable connects the
controller to the
receiver; both for
supplying power to
it and for collecting
up to eight channels
of position data
from it. Although
only a basic four channel radio system is required for control, addi-
tional channels can be used for advanced functionality and for oper-
ating optional accessories.
Once the connec-
tions are complete,
the boards are slid
into chassis slots.
The circuit boards
themselves add
rigidness to the
somewhat flexible
chassis. Extra board
slots are available
to accommodate
numerous options such as an LED lighting kit. The two-piece
chassis serves as the core to which everything else is attached.
The four motor booms with pre-installed motors and wiring are
snapped in to the chassis and then plugged into leads extending
from the two ESC boards. The bottom cover and landing gear
struts are screwed to the bottom of the chassis and then carbon
fiber landing gear skids are slid into the struts. To finish the con-
struction, an aluminum stabilizer plate screws on to the top of the
chassis. Hook-and-loop tape firmly secures the motor booms to
this plate. Just to keep it real, you do need to perform a minimal
amount of soldering; the included power connector needs to be
attached to your flight battery.
